Quick answer

First find who bills you: go to HBOMax.com/subscription, or choose your profile and then Subscription in the app. If HBO Max bills you, choose Cancel Your Subscription, confirm and note your expiration date. You can stream until the billing period ends, and HBO Max does not refund subscriptions it bills directly. If another company bills you, such as Apple, Google Play, Roku or your TV provider, cancel with that company before your next billing date.

Find who bills you for HBO Max

HBO Max is sold through many providers, and the cancellation steps depend on who bills you. HBO Max lists three ways to check:

Web: go to HBOMax.com/subscription and sign in.
Phone, tablet or computer: in HBO Max, choose your profile and then Subscription.
TV device: in HBO Max, choose the Settings icon and then Subscription.

The company that bills you is shown at the top of the Subscription screen. HBO Max says you can also check your bank statements or ask your internet, mobile or TV provider whether it bills you for HBO Max.

How to cancel HBO Max on HBOMax.com

Go to HBOMax.com/subscription and sign in.
Choose Cancel Your Subscription. If there is no cancel option, note who bills you at the top of the screen and use the steps for that company below.
Confirm the cancellation and note your expiration date.

HBO Max says to cancel before your next billing date to avoid more charges. If you have the Extra Member Add-On, it is cancelled when your base plan expires, and HBO Max gives a prorated refund for any days left on the add-on.

If Apple, Google Play, Roku, Amazon or Samsung bills you

HBO Max says each of these companies sends a confirmation email when you cancel, and you can stream until the billing period ends.

Apple: on an iPhone or iPad, open Settings, choose your name, then Subscriptions, then HBO Max and Cancel Subscription. Use the same Apple Account you subscribed with. See how to cancel subscriptions on iPhone.
Google Play: open the Play Store app, choose your profile icon, then Payments & subscriptions, Subscriptions, HBO Max and Cancel subscription. Google says uninstalling the app does not cancel.
Roku: go to my.roku.com/subscriptions, find HBO Max under Active Subscriptions, choose Manage subscription and turn off auto-renew. Our Roku subscriptions guide explains which charges come from Roku.
Amazon Appstore: go to Amazon.com/appstoresubscriptions, find HBO Max under Your Subscriptions and turn off auto-renewal.
Samsung TV: go to samsungcheckout.com, choose Subscriptions from the Purchase History menu, find HBO Max and choose Unsubscribe.

If HBO Max comes through Hulu, Prime Video, YouTube TV or a provider

Hulu add-on: at hulu.com/account, select Manage Add-ons, toggle HBO Max off and select Review Changes.
Prime Video Channels: go to Manage Your Prime Video Channels, find HBO Max under Your Channels and choose Cancel Channel.

Verizon: HBO Max points +play customers to My Verizon on the web and myPlan perk customers to Add or remove perks in the My Verizon app.
Other internet, mobile or TV providers: sign in to the provider's website, use its help center or contact the provider.

What happens after you cancel

Your subscription stops renewing, and you can stream until it expires at the end of the billing period.
HBO Max says there is a no refund policy for subscriptions it bills directly. If you see an unexpected charge, it says to contact HBO Max support.
If Apple, Google Play, Roku or the Amazon Appstore bills you, HBO Max sends you to that company's refund policy. For other providers, ask the provider.
The Extra Member Add-On ends with your base plan, with a prorated refund for any unused days on the add-on.

Confirm the cancellation

If HBO Max bills you, sign in at HBOMax.com/subscription. A cancelled subscription shows Resume Your Subscription instead of Cancel Your Subscription. You can also get payment receipts there.
If another company bills you, check its subscriptions page and look for its confirmation email.
Check your card or bank statement after your next billing date. HBO Max says a charge after cancelling can mean you cancelled too close to renewal, the subscription is still active or you have more than one account. Our guide to unexpected and duplicate charges covers what to ask.

New subscribers may see two charges at first. HBO Max says one can be a temporary authorization hold that checks your payment method, which should drop off within 7 to 10 days depending on your bank.

Does deleting the HBO Max app cancel my subscription?

No. HBO Max says deleting the app does not cancel your subscription, which renews automatically until you cancel it with whoever bills you.

Will HBO Max refund the rest of my month?

Not if HBO Max bills you directly. Its help center says there is a no refund policy for subscriptions billed through HBO Max. If Apple, Google Play, Roku, Amazon or another provider bills you, that company's refund policy applies.

Is HBO Max the same service as Max?

Yes. Warner Bros. Discovery announced on May 14, 2025 that Max would be rebranded HBO Max. The cancellation steps in this guide use the current HBO Max name and help center.

Why was I charged after I cancelled HBO Max?

HBO Max lists three common reasons. You cancelled too close to the renewal date, since some providers require at least 24 hours. The subscription is still active. Or you have more than one account with its own subscription.

How do I check that my HBO Max subscription is cancelled?
