Quick answer

On iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, pick the subscription and tap Cancel Subscription. If it is not listed, search your email for a receipt from Apple to see which account bought it. To identify an apple.com/bill charge, search the amount at reportaproblem.apple.com, where you can also request a refund.

Cancel a subscription on your iPhone

These are Apple's steps for any subscription billed through your Apple Account, including ones you started inside an app.

  1. Open Settings and tap your name at the top.
  2. Tap Subscriptions.
  3. Tap the subscription you want to stop.
  4. Tap Cancel Subscription. You may need to scroll down to see it.

No Cancel button, or an expiration message in red? Apple says the subscription is already cancelled. For a free trial, cancel at least 24 hours before it ends.

If the subscription is not in the list

Apple lists only subscriptions billed to the Apple Account you are signed in with. To find out where a missing one lives, search your email for "receipt from Apple" or "invoice from Apple" and check which account is on the receipt.

  • Another Apple Account you use: sign in with that account and cancel there.
  • A family member's Apple Account: they have to cancel it. Apple does not let you cancel a family member's subscription.
  • No Apple receipt at all: another company bills you, such as the service itself or Google Play. Check the merchant name on your bank or card statement and cancel with that company.
  • Through your wireless carrier or another provider: contact that provider to cancel.

Cancel without your iPhone

On a Mac, open the App Store, click your name, click your name again, then click Subscriptions and choose the one to cancel.

On the web or an Android phone, go to account.apple.com, sign in and follow the prompts.

What an apple.com/bill charge is

apple.com/bill is how charges for things billed through an Apple Account usually appear on bank and card statements. That covers App Store purchases, Apple Music, TV and Podcasts purchases, and renewals of subscriptions such as iCloud+, Apple Music, Apple TV and Apple Arcade.

Three things make these charges hard to recognize:

  • Grouped purchases: Apple charges your payment method at the time of purchase or within a few days, and it can group several purchases into one charge. Purchases may not be grouped in Europe and India.
  • Family Sharing: purchases by family members can be charged to the organizer's payment method. Both the buyer and the organizer get an email receipt.
  • Small pending holds: updating your billing details or adding someone to Family Sharing can trigger a temporary authorization hold for a small amount. It is not a final charge.

How to find out what an Apple charge was for

Work through these checks in order. Most unknown charges turn out to be a grouped purchase, a renewal or a family member's purchase.

  1. Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in and search for the exact amount on your statement.
  2. If you cannot find it there, open the App Store on your iPhone, tap your photo, then Apps & Purchase History, then Purchase History. Search the amount, and tap "Last 90 days" to look further back.
  3. Search your email for "receipt from Apple" or "invoice from Apple" around the charge date. The receipt shows each item and the account that bought it.
  4. Sign in with any other Apple Account you use and repeat the search.
  5. Ask family members who share your payment method whether they bought it.
  6. Still no match? Contact Apple Support, then your bank or card issuer, since the charge may not be from Apple. Our guide to duplicate charges on your bank statement covers what to ask your bank.

Be careful with emails about purchases you do not recognize. Apple warns they may not come from Apple, so check your purchase history directly instead of clicking links.

How to ask Apple for a refund

Not every purchase qualifies, but you can request a refund for many apps, subscriptions and other content bought from Apple.

  1. Sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com.
  2. Choose "I'd like to", then "Request a refund".
  3. Pick the reason, then choose Next.
  4. Choose the app, subscription or item, then choose Submit.

Apple says to expect an update within 24 to 48 hours. A pending charge cannot be refunded until it posts and you get a receipt.

Stop it from happening again

Apple subscriptions are only part of the picture. Apps can also bill you directly, through Google Play or through your carrier. Our guide to finding all your subscriptions walks through every place to check, and the subscription cancellation guide covers the other billing companies.

Once a refund is approved, our guide to tracking a refund shows how to confirm it reached your account. For a rough estimate of what forgotten charges cost you each year, try the Money Leak Finder.

Frequently asked questions

iPhone subscriptions and Apple charges FAQ

How do I cancel a subscription on my iPhone?

Open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, choose the subscription and tap Cancel Subscription. If there is no Cancel button, or you see an expiration message in red, Apple says the subscription is already cancelled.

Why can't I find a subscription in my iPhone settings?

It was probably bought with another Apple Account, by a family member, or from another company. Search your email for "receipt from Apple" or "invoice from Apple" and check which account is on the receipt. If there is no Apple receipt, the company named on your bank statement bills you and you cancel with them.

What is apple.com/bill on my bank statement?

It is the label on charges for things billed through your Apple Account, such as App Store purchases and Apple subscriptions like iCloud+ or Apple Music. Apple can group several purchases into one charge, so one line may cover more than one item.

Can I get a refund for an Apple subscription?

Some purchases qualify. Sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com, choose "I'd like to", then "Request a refund", pick a reason and the item, and submit. Apple says to expect an update within 24 to 48 hours. A pending charge cannot be refunded until it posts.

How do I avoid being charged when a free trial ends?

Cancel it at least 24 hours before the trial ends, which is the timing Apple recommends. You can cancel right after you start the trial and check the end date shown in Subscriptions.
