Quick answer

Sign in to your Spotify account page, go to Manage your plan and select Cancel subscription. Spotify says Premium stays until your next billing date, then your account switches to free and keeps your playlists. Spotify's terms say there are no refunds or credits for partial periods unless the law requires it. If you don't see an option to change your plan, a partner such as your phone or internet provider bills you, and you cancel with them.

How to cancel Spotify Premium on your account page

  1. Sign in to your Spotify account page in a web browser, using the account that pays for Premium.
  2. Go to Manage your plan.
  3. Select Cancel subscription.
  4. Follow the prompts until Spotify confirms the cancellation.

Spotify's help page says you can also cancel by completing a cancellation form and sending it to Spotify. Cancelling during a zero-priced free trial moves you to the free service right away, and that trial can't be reactivated.

Cancel a Spotify Family or Duo plan

  • Plan manager: follow the same steps above. Spotify says to let all members know, because they lose Premium benefits starting from the next payment date.
  • Managed accounts: if you cancel a Family plan, Spotify moves any managed accounts to the free, ad-supported plan.
  • Plan member: following the cancel steps removes your account from the plan but does not cancel it. Ask the plan manager to cancel or to update the payment method.

If a partner, Google Play or another company bills you

Spotify says that if you see no option to change your plan, your Premium is tied to a partner company, such as your mobile or internet provider. Check your receipt or statement to see who charges you, then cancel with that company.

  • Phone or internet partner: go to Manage your plan and check Payment to find the partner's contact link. Spotify says it can't refund Premium payments made through a partner, so ask the partner about refunds.
  • Google Play: Spotify says Google manages payments made with Google Play Billing, so speak to Google about anything payment related. In the Play app, go to subscriptions, select Spotify and tap Cancel subscription. Google says uninstalling the app does not cancel.
  • Apple: if your Spotify receipt comes from Apple, Apple says to cancel in Settings, then your name, then Subscriptions. See how to cancel subscriptions on iPhone.
  • Roku: Roku says that if you subscribed directly through a streaming service such as Spotify, you cancel through that service, not Roku. Our Roku subscriptions guide shows how to tell which company bills you.

What happens after you cancel

  • Premium stays until your next billing date, then your account switches to the free service.
  • You keep your playlists and saved music, and you can still log in and play with ads.
  • Spotify's Terms of Use say there are no refunds or credits for partial subscription periods unless the law requires it.
  • Spotify can't refund gift cards bought from a store. It says to return them to the store.
  • If Spotify announces a price change you don't accept, its terms say you can unsubscribe before the change takes effect.

Change to a smaller plan instead

If you pay Spotify directly and only want to spend less, Spotify lets you change plans from your account page. You keep your playlists, saved music and settings on any plan.

  • Premium Individual or Student: on your account page, under Manage your subscription, click Change plan and choose a plan. Spotify says the change applies right away.
  • Family or Duo manager: when you move to a smaller plan, you choose which members keep Premium. Members you don't select move to free on your next billing date, and you pay the new price on the day the credit for your old plan runs out.
  • Google Play billing: Spotify says you can only change plans in the Spotify app, under Settings and privacy, Account, then See available plans.

Confirm the cancellation

  1. After your next billing date, sign in to your account page. Spotify says an account on the free service has no Premium plan to cancel and no payment details.
  2. If a partner or Google bills you, check that company's account or bill for new Spotify charges.
  3. Check your card or bank statement on the date your next payment would have been due. A new Spotify charge usually means Premium is active on another Spotify account. Our guide to unexpected and duplicate charges covers what to ask.

Check for other streaming charges

Music and video subscriptions often bill on different dates and cards. Our guide to finding all your subscriptions covers every place to look, and the Money Leak Finder gives a rough yearly cost of charges you no longer use. For more provider steps, see the subscription cancellation guide.

Frequently asked questions

Spotify Premium FAQ

When does Spotify Premium end after I cancel?

Spotify says your Premium stays until your next billing date, then your account switches to the free, ad-supported service. If you cancel during a zero-priced free trial, the account switches to free right away and the trial can't be reactivated.

Will Spotify refund the rest of my month?

No. Spotify's Terms of Use say it does not give refunds or credits for partial subscription periods unless the law requires it. Spotify also says it can't refund Premium payments made through a partner, so ask the partner.

Why can't I find the cancel option on Spotify?

Spotify says a missing option to change plan means a partner company, such as your mobile or internet provider, handles your Premium. Go to Manage your plan and check Payment to find the partner's contact link.

How do I cancel a Spotify Family or Duo plan?

Only the plan manager can cancel. Members lose Premium from the next payment date, and managed accounts on a Family plan move to the free plan. If a member follows the cancel steps, Spotify removes that member from the plan but does not cancel it.

Do I lose my playlists if I cancel Spotify Premium?

No. Spotify says you keep your playlists and saved music on the free service, and you can still log in and play with ads.

Why am I still charged when my Spotify account shows free?

Spotify says a free account has no Premium plan or payment details on it, so you likely have Premium on a different Spotify account. Log out and back in with your other details, then cancel there.
