Does Amazon do price adjustments? What to do when a price drops

Amazon does not refund price drops on ordinary orders, but its pre-order guarantee and 30-day returns give you options. Here is what works.

Quick answer

No, not for ordinary purchases. Amazon says it compares its prices with competitors itself, so it does not offer price matching compensation. The exception is the Pre-order Price Guarantee: eligible pre-orders sold by Amazon.com are charged the lowest price offered before release. Otherwise, if the item is unused and still inside Amazon's return window (30 days from delivery for most items), you can return it and buy it again at the lower price.

Amazon's pre-order price guarantee

This is the one case where Amazon gives you a lower price automatically. To qualify, the item must:

Not be released yet.
Be sold by Amazon.com, not another seller.
Show the Pre-order Price Guarantee message on its product page.

For physical items, Amazon charges the lowest Amazon.com price offered between your order and the end of release day. If your order shipped before release and the price drops by the end of release day, Amazon says it refunds the difference to your card within 48 hours.

What to do when the price drops on a regular order

If the order has not shipped, check Your Orders. You may be able to cancel and reorder at the lower price.
If it has arrived, check the return-by date in Your Orders. Most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery if they are in original or unused condition.
Start the return and reorder at the lower price while it lasts. Check whether the return is free for that item first.
Track the refund. Amazon says it can take up to 30 days to receive and process a return. Our guide to tracking a refund shows what to check.

Return windows that are shorter than 30 days

15 days: new Apple and Boost Infinite products, and Amazon Haul items over $3.
7 days: some accidental digital purchases, such as unread Kindle books.
Third-party sellers may have different terms. Check the item's return eligibility in your order history.

Track the price before you buy

Since Amazon will not refund a later drop, timing matters more than at stores with price adjustments. Amazon says Alexa for Shopping can show up to a year of a product's price history and set price alerts.
