Ways to cancel LA Fitness
LA Fitness member services, checked Oct. 16, 2026
Quick answer
LA Fitness says most month-to-month memberships can be cancelled at any time in three ways: through your online account, in person at a club's front desk, or by written notice mailed to P.O. Box 54170, Irvine, CA 92619. A mailed notice postmarked at least 5 business days before your next billing date should stop further billing. Contracts with an initial term of three months or more have extra rules.
Three ways to cancel LA Fitness
LA Fitness's member services page lists these methods for most month-to-month club memberships. Your agreement may add others; LA Fitness says that depending on your state of enrollment, you may be able to cancel by email.
- Online: sign in to your LA Fitness account at lafitness.com and use the cancellation option. LA Fitness says it offers online cancellation for all members, however they signed up.
- In person: go to the front desk at a club.
- By mail: send written notice to LA Fitness, P.O. Box 54170, Irvine, CA 92619. LA Fitness recommends registered or certified mail and keeping a record.
How to cancel LA Fitness online
- Go to lafitness.com and sign in to your account. If you cannot remember your login, the reset needs the email you joined with, your key tag number and the first five digits of the card or bank account on file, according to the FTC's complaint.
- Find the cancellation option in your account and follow the prompts.
- Save or screenshot the confirmation, including the effective date.
- Check whether you pay for add-ons such as towel service or personal training, and cancel any you no longer want. The FTC's complaint says add-ons can be cancelled separately from the membership.
If your account shows a message that you cannot access your membership information, LA Fitness says to contact your local club. Use the in-person or mail option instead.
Cancel by mail
Written notice does not have to be on a special form. The FTC's complaint says LA Fitness did not make clear that a plain written notice is accepted. Include enough for LA Fitness to find your account:
- Your full name as it appears on the membership.
- Your key tag or membership number, if you have it.
- Your home club location.
- Your phone number and email.
- A clear statement that you are cancelling your membership, plus any add-ons.
- The date and your signature.
Keep a copy of the letter and the mailing receipt. The postmark date decides whether you meet the 5-business-day deadline.
Timing and your final charges
LA Fitness says a mailed notice postmarked at least 5 business days before your next billing date should result in no further billing. If it is postmarked inside that window, you may be billed once more, and LA Fitness says it will refund that extra billing.
New members pay their first and last month's dues when joining, according to the FTC. LA Fitness says those prepaid last-month dues apply to the month after your final regular payment, so you can keep using the club until that prepaid month ends.
Contracts with a minimum term
If your membership, personal training or other agreement has an initial term of three months or more, LA Fitness lists three cases:
- Past the initial term: you can cancel at any time using the methods above.
- Still in the initial term: your cancellation takes effect when the term ends.
- Want out before the term ends: a termination fee applies.
Freezing instead of cancelling
If you only need a break, LA Fitness lets monthly-dues members freeze for $10 a month, bi-weekly members for $5 per billing, and paid-in-full members for up to 6 months for a one-time $35 fee. Weekly-dues members cannot freeze. You can freeze from the Freeze link in your online account.
The FTC case over LA Fitness cancellations
In August 2025, the FTC sued the operators of LA Fitness, alleging they made cancelling too hard. The complaint says members were limited to in-person cancellation with one specific employee or certified mail, and that staff were trained to refuse cancellations by phone or email. It also alleges that members who stopped payments at their bank were often rebilled under new account numbers.
LA Fitness's operator called the allegations without merit and said it had launched online cancellation for all members before the FTC's click-to-cancel rule was due. The FTC amended its complaint in January 2026, and its case page lists the case as pending. An April 2026 legal analysis reported that LA Fitness had asked the court to dismiss the case. The allegations are not findings, but they show why proof of cancellation matters.
If LA Fitness keeps charging you
Contact your club with your confirmation or mailing receipt and ask for a refund of any charge after the effective date. Do not rely on blocking the payment: the FTC's complaint describes members being rebilled under new account numbers after doing that, and stopping payment does not end the agreement.
If the club will not fix it, ask your bank or card issuer about disputing the charge. Our guide to duplicate and unexpected charges covers what to ask. Leaving another gym too? See how to cancel Crunch Fitness or Planet Fitness.

Frequently asked questions
LA Fitness cancellation FAQ
Can I cancel LA Fitness online?
Yes. LA Fitness lists your online account as one of three ways to cancel, alongside in person at a club and written notice by mail. Sign in at lafitness.com and look for the cancellation option in your account.
What is the LA Fitness cancellation address?
LA Fitness lists P.O. Box 54170, Irvine, CA 92619 for written cancellation notices. It recommends registered or certified mail and keeping a record.
How far before my billing date do I need to cancel?
For mailed notices, LA Fitness says a cancellation postmarked at least 5 business days before your next billing date should stop further billing. If it is postmarked later, you may be billed once more, and LA Fitness says it will refund that extra billing.
Is there an LA Fitness cancellation fee?
Not for most month-to-month memberships. If your agreement has an initial term of three months or more and you are still in it, LA Fitness says cancellation takes effect when the term ends, and cancelling earlier means a termination fee.
Can I still use the gym after cancelling?
Yes, for time you already paid for. LA Fitness says prepaid last-month dues are applied after your final regular payment, and the membership expires at the end of that prepaid month.
