Quick answer

Call Progressive and ask a representative to cancel. Its car insurance FAQ lists 1-800-776-4737, and its contact page lists general customer service at 1-888-671-4405, both open 24/7. Before you call, start your new policy and set the Progressive end date to the day new coverage begins. Progressive says you get back money you paid in advance for unused time. Depending on your state and when you cancel, a cancellation fee may apply, so ask first.

How to cancel a Progressive auto policy

  1. Buy your new policy first and note its start date. Skip this step only if you will no longer drive or own a registered car.
  2. Call Progressive at 1-800-776-4737 or general customer service at 1-888-671-4405. Progressive says both are open 24/7. For a commercial policy, its contact page lists 1-888-240-9839, and Spanish service is at 1-833-951-4271.
  3. Tell the representative you want to cancel, give your policy number and ask for the policy to end on the date your new coverage starts.
  4. Ask whether your state requires a signed cancellation form or written notice. Progressive's guide says some insurers require one.
  5. Ask what refund you will get, whether any cancellation fee applies and how the refund will be paid.
  6. If you pay automatically, check that no new Progressive payment posts after the end date.

Your new insurer generally can't cancel the old policy for you. Progressive says cancelling the old policy is usually your job, so contact Progressive right after you buy the new policy.

Pick the right effective date

Progressive says you can cancel at any time, for any reason, and never have to wait for the end of your policy period. That includes a policy that started a few days ago or just renewed.

If you will keep driving, Progressive says not to cancel until you have a new policy. Once you know its effective date, ask Progressive to cancel effective the first day of the new policy. Matching the two dates is how you avoid a lapse.

Refunds of unused premium

Progressive's car insurance FAQ says that when you cancel with an insurer, you get a refund for the money you paid in advance. How much comes back depends on how you pay.

  • Paid in full: Progressive's example is a 12-month policy paid upfront and cancelled after three months, which gets a refund for the remaining nine months.
  • Paid monthly: if you cancel at the end of a month or billing cycle, Progressive says you probably won't get a refund. Cancelling mid-cycle may bring a small refund for the part of the month already paid.
  • Refund method: Progressive says refunds usually go back the way you paid, such as a check if you paid by check or a credit on your card if you paid by card.
  • Smaller changes can also bring money back. Progressive says removing a vehicle, dropping coverage or lowering limits may lead to a refund or an account credit.

Cancellation fees can depend on your state

Progressive's cancellation guide says that, depending on your state and when you cancel, an insurer may charge a cancellation fee. Its switching guide says your refund for unused time is subject to any cancellation fee your insurer may charge. The Progressive pages we checked do not list a fee amount.

Ask the representative two things before you confirm: whether a fee applies to your policy in your state, and what your refund will be after it.

Avoid a gap in coverage

Progressive notes that nearly every state requires drivers to carry auto liability coverage, so have another policy in effect before you cancel. If you finance or lease the car, your lender or lease company will typically require comprehensive and collision coverage too.

  • Progressive says even one day without coverage can lead to a higher rate later.
  • Your state's DMV may be notified that you are uninsured, which can lead to a fine or a license suspension. Progressive says you may also have to carry an SR-22 for several years.
  • A lender or leasing company can repossess the vehicle if required coverage lapses.
  • Progressive says you may not be eligible for its Continuous Insurance Discount if you go more than one month without insurance.

Don't just stop paying. Progressive says that if an insurer cancels a policy for non-payment, you get no refund and still owe the unpaid premium.

Selling your car, moving or not renewing

  • Selling a car: Progressive says to cancel only after you sign over the title, complete the bill of sale and file a Notice of Release of Liability with your DMV if your state requires one. Keep the bill of sale ready when you call. If you're buying another car, you can add it to your policy instead of cancelling, or consider a non-owner policy in between.
  • Moving to another state: Progressive says you won't have to change insurers unless your insurer doesn't offer coverage there. When you move out of state, your insurer cancels the old policy and issues a new one.
  • Not renewing: Progressive says to tell your insurer before the renewal date and, if you pay automatically, to cancel before the first renewal payment is taken. A Progressive policy may renew automatically if you're enrolled in automatic payments.

Home, condo and renters policies

Progressive sells home, condo and renters insurance through a network of home insurance companies, and the company varies by location. Its home insurance FAQ says that when you log in, Progressive directs you to your home insurance provider. Contact that provider to cancel.

If your home insurance is paid through escrow, Progressive says to let your mortgage lender know when you change home insurance companies. If you bundle policies, ask whether cancelling one changes the multi-policy discount on the others.

Check your statement after you cancel

Look for the refund to arrive on the payment method you used, and make sure no new premium is drawn after the end date. Frequently asked questions

Progressive cancellation FAQ

How do I cancel my Progressive insurance policy?

Contact Progressive. Its car insurance FAQ says a representative will help you cancel, and Progressive lists 1-800-776-4737 and general customer service at 1-888-671-4405, both open 24/7. Have your policy number and the date you want coverage to end.

Can I cancel Progressive at any time?

Yes. Progressive says you can cancel or switch insurers at any time, even if you just renewed, and you don't have to wait until the end of your policy period.

Will Progressive refund my unused premium?

Progressive says that when you cancel with an insurer, you get a refund for money you paid in advance. If you paid the full term upfront, the unused part is refunded. If you pay monthly and cancel at the end of a billing cycle, there may be nothing to refund. Refunds usually go back to the payment method you used.

Is there a cancellation fee?

It depends. Progressive's own cancellation guide says that, depending on your state and when you cancel, an insurer may charge a cancellation fee. The pages we checked do not list a Progressive fee amount, so ask the representative before you confirm the cancellation date.

What date should my Progressive policy end?

The first day your new policy starts. Progressive says to get the effective date of your new policy, then ask your current insurer to cancel effective that same day so there is no gap in coverage.

Can I just stop paying instead of cancelling?

It's a bad idea. Progressive says that if an insurer cancels a policy for non-payment, you get no refund and still owe any unpaid premium. A lapse can also lead to fines, a license suspension or higher rates later.
