Quick answer
Valve will refund nearly any game or software on Steam, for any reason, if you ask within 14 days of purchase and have played it for less than 2 hours. Request it at help.steampowered.com: log in, click Purchases, pick the purchase, choose a problem and click I'd like to request a refund. You can take the money as Steam Wallet funds or back to your original payment method. Approved refunds can take up to 7 days to appear.
Steam's refund policy: 14 days and 2 hours
Steam says you can request a refund for nearly any purchase, for any reason. Your PC may not meet the requirements, you may have bought the wrong game, or you may have played for an hour and not liked it.
For games and software, Valve will refund you if you ask within 14 days of purchase and have played for less than 2 hours. That playtime includes online, offline and shared library play.
Even if you fall outside those rules, Valve says you can ask anyway and it will take a look. Consumers in some places may also have extra refund rights when a game is faulty.
How to request a Steam refund
- Go to help.steampowered.com and log in with your Steam account.
- Click Purchases.
- Find the purchase you want to refund and click it.
- Select the problem you are having with it.
- Click I'd like to request a refund.
- Fill out the form. Use the drop-down menu to choose Steam Wallet or your original payment method, then submit it.
If the purchase is not listed, Steam says it is too far outside the refund window to qualify. You get a confirmation email when the request is submitted and another when the refund is processed.
DLC, in-game items and bundles
If an in-game purchase is missing, Steam asks you to contact the game's support team first and attach that conversation to your refund request if they cannot help.
- DLC: refundable within 14 days of purchase if you have played the main game for less than 2 hours since buying the DLC, and the DLC has not been consumed, modified or transferred. Some third-party DLC cannot be refunded, such as DLC that permanently levels up a character, and Steam marks it as nonrefundable on the store page before you buy.
- In-game purchases: in Valve-developed games, refundable within 48 hours if the item has not been consumed, modified or transferred. Other developers can choose to offer the same terms, and Steam tells you at checkout. Otherwise, in-game purchases in non-Valve games are not refundable through Steam.
- Bundles: you can get a full refund if none of the items have been transferred and your combined playtime across everything in the bundle is under 2 hours. If a bundle includes a nonrefundable item, Steam tells you at checkout whether the whole bundle can be refunded.
Pre-purchases, gifts and Steam Wallet funds
- Pre-purchases: if you buy a title before its release date, the 2-hour limit still applies, except for beta testing, and the 14 days do not start until the release date. For Early Access or Advance Access games, any playtime counts toward the 2 hours. If the game is not playable before release, you can request a refund any time before it comes out.
- Gifts: an unredeemed gift can be refunded within the standard 14 days and 2 hours. A redeemed gift can be refunded under the same conditions if the person who received it starts the refund. The money goes back to the buyer.
- Steam Wallet funds: refundable within 14 days if you bought them on Steam and have not used any of them.
Subscriptions, VAC bans and other exceptions
- Renewable subscriptions: if you have not used the subscription in the current billing cycle, you can request a refund within 48 hours of the first purchase or of any automatic renewal. It counts as used if you played any game in it this cycle or used any of its benefits or discounts.
- VAC bans: if Valve Anti-Cheat has banned you in a game, you lose the right to refund that game.
- Video content: movies, series, episodes and tutorials cannot be refunded unless they came in a bundle with other refundable content that is not video.
- Purchases outside Steam: Valve cannot refund CD keys or Steam Wallet cards bought from other sellers.
- Steam hardware: refunds follow Steam's separate Hardware Refund Policy.
You can cancel a Steam subscription at any time from your account details. It stops renewing, and you keep access until the end of the current billing cycle.
Where your refund goes and how long it takes
Steam issues a full refund within a week of approval, either as Steam Wallet funds or back to the payment method you used. If it cannot refund your original payment method, it credits your Steam Wallet instead. Some payment methods do not support refunds back to the original method, and Steam's list varies by country. When we checked, it showed Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, JCB and PayPal.
Steam's support FAQ says approved refunds can take up to 7 days to appear, and Steam Wallet credit can take 24 to 48 hours. Refunds to international payment methods may take longer. If nothing has arrived after 7 days, ask your bank about pending refunds.
If your refund is approved within 24 hours of purchase, Steam cancels the original transaction instead. Your bank can take up to 30 days to release the hold and remove the charge, and you will not see a credit. Our guide to tracking a refund covers how to follow it on your statement.
Can't find a Wallet refund? You may have spent the funds on another purchase. In Steam, click your account name, then Account Details and View purchase history.
Refund abuse and declined requests
Steam says refunds exist to take the risk out of buying, not as a way to get free games. If it looks like you are abusing refunds, Valve may stop offering them to you. You can submit any number of requests for eligible purchases, and refunding a game bought just before a sale to rebuy it at the sale price is not considered abuse.
Purchases made well outside the 14-day window are not eligible. If you think Steam made a mistake with your request, you can submit another one at help.steampowered.com with a detailed message. Refunding a game does not remove your playtime or achievements from your Steam Community profile.
